was held at the Office Building of said County on the 19th day of June,.1946.
Present: Messrs. P._ H. Gantry, E. J~ Ballard, T. E. Bruce, Henry Chiles, C. Pur-
cell McCue, and W. N. Wood.
Absent: None.
Officers Present: County Executive, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Sheriff.
Minutes of the meeting of Nay 15, 1946were read and approved.
Specifications and Blueprints for the ~ater System Improvements for the Crozet
Sanitary District were received from Niley and Wilson. Upon motion, made by Mr. Henry'Chiles
and seconded by Mro C~ Purcell ~cCue, Mro P. H. Gentry was requested to sign the Contract
for the same on'behalf of the Board.

Upon motion, duly~de and seconded, the following resolution was unanimously
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Supervisors o~lbe-
marle County, that a petition to be signed by at least a major£ty of
this Board shall be presented to the Circuit Court of Albemarle
County, or to the Judge thereof~ vacation, praying that an order
may be made requiring the Judges of Election of the next regular
election to be held the first Tumsday in November, 1946, to open a
poll in the Crozet Sanitary District of the County of Albemarle, and
take the sense of the qualified voters of the said Sanitary District
upon the question whether the said Sani%ary District shall issue
bonds in a s~m not in excess of $250,000 for Water Supply in the
said Cromer Sa~itary~ District.
Mr. R. Co Ambler appeared and presented a petition toques.ting that the road startin
at the Alberene Post Office and ending in the village known as Stump Town, a distance of
approximately 3/8 of a mile, be taken into the Secondary SyStem. Upon motion, made by Mr.
Bruce and Seconded by Mr. Chiles, the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
BE IT RESOLVED by ~the Board of County Supervisors of Albe-
marle County, Virginia, that the State Department of Highways be and
is hereby requested to take into the Secondary System approximately
3/8 of a mile of a road starting at the Alberene Post Office~ and'
ending in ~the village known as Stump Town,
Mr. Ambler also presented a petition requesting that Route 756 be extended. Action
on this matter was deferred until more information on the condition of the road could be
obtained.
Mr. R. C. Ambler, Resident Engineer, presented to the Board the Budget for the
Secondary System of Highways for the year ending June 30, 1947. Upon motion, made by Mr.
Chiles, and seconded by Mr. Bruce, the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Supervisors of Albe-
marle~ County, Virginia, that the Budget of the Secondary System of
Highways for the year ending June 30, 1947, as presented by Mr. R. C.
Ambler, Resident Engineer, be and the same is hereby approved.
Mr. Henry Chiles presented a request for one-fourth of a mile on Route 240 from
the Highway to the ~i ~erty of Dr. Thomas Alphin to be taken into the
Secondary System. Since Mr. Ambler did not recommend that this road be taken into the~ Secon-~
dary System,~ no action was taken by the Board.
In a report received from a committee consisting of Mr. P. H. Gentry and W. W. Wood1
the following improvements were not recommended~
2.) The road known as 18th Street extending from Market Street to
Chesapeake Street, or to such point as seems advisable.
3. ) Road No. 740 connecting Highway No. 231 and Highway No. 22 at
Cismont.
4.) About one mile of Route 615, old Cobham Road.
Upon motion, made by Mr. McCue and seconded by Mr. Ballard, the resignation of ~r.
Herbert L. Johnson, Game Warden, which was presented to the Board on May 15, 1946, was ac~
cepted effective Ju~y 1, 1946.
Resignations were received from Mr. C. R. Dottier, B. C. Baker, and Cammann Duke, i?

as members of the School Board to become effective July 1, 1946. MrS. H. G. Cockrell was i!
instructed, to write to the above members expressing the Board's appreciation for the service~
which they have rendered to the County and to also request that they continue to serve on
the School Board until their successors could be appointed.

A Statement of Expmnses incurred in the maintenance of prisoners confined in the
County Jail during the month of May, 1946, was submitted. Upon motion, duly made and
seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, and appro~ed~
A Summary Statement of Prisoner Days for the month of Nay, 1946, was submitted.
Upon motion, duly made and seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, and approved.
Claim of Dr. Richard T. Ergenbright, Jail Physician, amounting to $2.50 was pre-
sented and approved for payment.
Mr. R. Claude Graham appeared and presented the following resolution which was
a~opted by the Schoe~ Board on JunetS, 1946:;
"Inasmuch as it is difficult to get teachers to fill existing
vacancies and inasmuch as wages, and consequently the cost of living,
have recently increased generally in the Country ~h~ Albemarle County
School Board requests the County Board of Supervisors of Albemarle
County to make an additional appropriation sufficient to increase in
~he amount of fifteen dollars ($15.00) per month the~salaries of all
teachers who receive an annual salary less than fifteen hundred dollars
$1 00.0o).
Mr. Graham advised the Board that it would take approximately $20,520.00 to take
care of the increases proposed. Upon motion, made by Mr. McCne and seconded by ~r. Bruce,
the following resolution was unanimously adopted:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Supervisors of Albemar~te
County, Virginia, that $20,~20.00, or as much thereof as may be necessary,
be and is hereby appropriated to cover the increases of salaries of school

A request was received for increases in the salary of the Deputy Sheriff~ Upon

Request was received from Mr. C. H. Shapleighfor a 25% increase in salaries of
employees of the Land Map Department. After considerable discussion of the mat~er, $960.00

Proposals to paint the interior of the County Office Building were received from
J. A. Burgess and D. F. Mowbray. Upon motion, made by ~r. McCue and seconded by' Mr. Bruce,
Mr. D. F. Mowbray was awarded the job for the sum of $2,755.00.
Claims against the Dog Fund were received from E. T. Berry and L. B. Clements
and allowed by the Board.
An offer of $140.00 was received from C. E. Durham for 53 acres of land near
Woodridg~ in the Sco~tsville District. Upon motion, mady by ~r. McCue,~tHis~offer,~wa~
accepted.
An offer of $100.00 was received from James S. Brookman for 3.13 acres of land
in the Scottsville District. ~r. Bruce was instructed to investigate this peice of property
and report his findings to the Board at the nex~ meeting.
Claim was received from the Central Sta~e Hospital in the amount of $82.AA and
was approved f~o payment.
Communication was received from The Arlington Daily and was ordered filed.
Claims against the County amounting to $73, 523.61 were presented, examined, and
allowed and ordered certified to the Director of Finanoe for payment and charged against the
following funds:
