was held at the Office Building of said County on the !Tth day of December, 1947.~
Present: Messrs. P. H. Gentry. E. J. Ballard, Heory Chiles, C. R. Dottier, C.
Purcell McCue, and W. W. ~ood.

Officers present; County Executive, Commonwealth's ~ttorney, and Sheriff.
Minutes of the meeting of November 19, 1947, were read and approved.
Mrs. Randoloh Catlin, President of the Firginia Musical Festival, Inc. appeared
and requested that the Bounty appropriated $100.00 to be contributed to the Virginia Music
Festival. Upon motion made by Mr. Henry Chiles and seconded by Mr. E. J. Bal!ard, the
following resolution was unanimously adopted:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Supervisors of Albe-
marle County, Virginia, that $100.00 be and is hereby appropriated
out of Unappropriated Reserve to be paid to the Virginia Music Fes-
tival, Inc. and charged to Special Services, ~iscellaneous.
Allen Randolph appeared concerning the ordinance proposed to prohibit the
sale and possession of fireworks. UpOn motion, made by Mr. C. R. Dorrier and seconded by
~r. N. W. ~ood, this matter was postponed until the next meeting of the Board.
Mr. T. W. Douglas appeared and presented a~petition requesting that the roads in ~
~aury Hills be taken into the Secondary System. Upon motion, made by Mr. Henry Chiles and 'i
seconded by ~r. C. Purcell McCue, it was ordered that these reads be viewed the next time
viewers are appointed and that Mr. Douglas be notified of the time of the viewers's meeting.'
Mr. William ~aupin appeared concerning a card file system for recording delinquen~i
land taxes. Upon motion, made by Mr. C. Purcell NcCue and seconded by Mr. E. J. Ballard,
Mr. ~aupin was authorized to put in a system of card files for recording delinquent land
taxes.
Mr. Ambler appeare~ and presented a copy of the Secondary Roa~ Allocations for
194.8 and 194~.
A letter was received from Miss Martha Gillock requesting theZ the outlet from her
property to Route 692 be improved. Upon motion, made by Mr. C. Purcell McCue and seconded
by ~r. Henry Chiles, it was ordered that this road be viewed the next time viewers are
appointed.

IN RE: The matter of discontinueing a portion of the Old Stony Point Road from the entrance
of John G. Yancey and Virginia W. Yancey southward

This proceeding came on this day to be heard on an appeal by John G. Yancey and
Virginia W. Yancey from the action of the Board of County Supervisors of Albemarle County,
Virginia, in denying the discontinuance of a portion of the old Stony Point Road; upon the
apearance of MontaguH. McMurdo, an adjoinging property owner, in person and by counsei, an~
the State Department of Highways by its Resident Engineer, and was argued by counsel.
It appearing to the Court that it is proper that a portion of the old Stony Point
Charlottesville Road be closed and discontinued as a public road, the Court doth ADJUDGE
and ORDER that the portion of the 01d Charlottesville-Stony Point Road which extends south-
ward from its intersection with the present Charlottesville Stony Point Road, being Route
north of the entrance or driveway of John G. Yancey and Virginia W. Yancey, to the northern

Yancey by deed dated December l, 19~7 and recorded in the Clerk's Office of this Court in th~
current Deed Book, be closed and discontinued as a public road sixty days after the entry of this
order.
It is further ADJUDGED and ORD~ED that the Clerk of this Court shall certify that
order to the Board of County Supervisors of Albemarle County, who shall proceed to carry out
the judgment of this Court.
It is further ADJUDGED and 8RDEEED that the Clerk of this Court record a copy of
this order in the cur~'ent Deed Book and index same in the name of John G. Yancey and Virgini~
W. Yanc~y.
It is further ADJUDGED and O~DE~ED that this action be stricken from the docket
and placed' among the ended law action.

Mr. Paul J. Durrette appeared and n~quested that hard surface b~ put on the road
fro~ Longwood to the property of Jake Via, approximately 2~- or 3 miled on Eoute 665, and
advised that he would be willing to contribute a part of the cost of this ~ork. ~r. Durrett~
was advised by ~ro Ambler to await a ruling from the State Department of Highways.
Eesignations were received and accepted from ~r. Henry ~cCo~b and ~r. Pierson Scot
as members of the $1anning Commission. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, Dr. Birdsong
and ~r. Thomas R. Shepher~ were appointed to serve the unexpired terms of ~ro Bush and ~r.
Scott.
The following reports were presented and ordered filed:

Mr. H. Go Cockrell, Director of Finance, presented a Statement of Expenses of the
Department of Finance for the month of November, 19~7, one-t~hird of which to be borne by
· the State. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, this Statement was examined~ verified, and
approved.
Mr. H. G. Cockrell, Director of Finance, presented a Statement of Expenses of the
Sheriff's office f~r the month of November, 1947, two-thirds of which to be borne by the
State. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, and
approved.
Nr. H. G. Cockrel~, Director of Finance, submitted a Statement of Expenses of the
Commonwealth s Attorney's Office for the month of Ncvember, 19~7, one-half of which to be
borne 'by the State° Npon motion, duly made and seconded, this Statement was examined, veri-
fied, and approved.
A Statement of Expenses incurred in the maintenance of prisoners confined in the
County J~il during the month of November, 19~7, was submitted. Upon motion, duly made and
seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, and approved.
A Summary Statement of prisoner days was submitted. Upon motion, duly made and
seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, and approved.
Claim of Dr~ Richard T. Ergenbright, Jail Physician, amounting to $0.75 was pre-
sented and approved for payment.
Communication concerning tear gas wa~ received from Federal Laboratories, Inc. ~d
was ordered filed.
Upon motion, made by ~r. C. Purcell ~cCue and seconded by ~r. Henry Chil~s, the
~ollowing resolution was unanimously adopted:

The resignation of Dr. T. S. Eng!ar, Health Officer of the Joint Health Depart-
ment was received and accepted upon motion made by Mr. G. Purcell ~cCue and seconded by
Mr. Henry Chiles.
Mr. C. R. Dorrier was appointed to succeed Mr. T. E. Bruce on the following
committees:
(1) Health Department Contract Committee.
(2) Airport Committee.
(3) Hospital Committee.
A communication was received from the Bureau of Public Administration concerningi
a survey of the work done by the Joint Health Department for the County and City respectively.
Mr. Ho G. Cockrell was authorized to have a survey made starting January l, 1948.
Upon motion, duly made and seconded, it was ordered that the Arnold Company
be given the contract for installing ~two-way radios in the SherifF's cars on the basis of
the proposal received on November ll, 1947.
Epon motion, made by Mr. henry Chiles and seconded by Mr. C. Purcell McCue, it
was ordered that Mrs. Eva W. Maupin's salary be raised to $5,000.00 per year to become
effective January l, 1948.
Bids were received from several companies to furnish the bond of H. G. Cockrell
as Director of Finance. Upon motion, du~y made and seconded, the bond was awarded to
C. B. ~ackreth, Agent of the New Amsterdam Casualty Company.
A progress statement was received from the Virginia State Planning Board and
was ordered filed.
Audit of the accounts of the Trial Justice Department was received, accepted,
and ordered filed.
Upon motion made by Mr. C. Purcell McCue and dm~y~eSo~ed, ~r. H. G. Cockrell
was authorized to sell bonds of various road districts to take care Of bonds matur£ng.
Upon motion, made by' ~r. Henry Chiles and seconded by Mr. C. Purcell ~cCue, the ~
following resolution was unanimously adopted:
BE IT RESOLVED that~360.O0 be and is hereby appropriated
to cover increases in salaries of the Deputy Sheriffs for the period ~
beginning January l, 1948 and ending June 30, 1948.
Upon motion, duly made and seconded, Mr. H. G. Cockrell was authorized to ~
purchase a new post~ge meter machine for the Department of Finance. ~
Upon motion, made by Mr. Henry Chiles and seconded by ~r. W. W. Wood~ ~r. Po H.
Gentry was authorized to sign a deed of the Crozet Lumber Co., Inc. on the behalf of the
County of Albemarle.
Claims against the County amounting to $165,621.17 were presented, examined,
and allowed, and certified to the Hirector of Finance for payment and charged against the
General Fund
