The owner has decided to use wood railing that will be #1 pressure treated yellow pine. In addition, he wishes to stain the deck and railing to match the siding of his existing building. That is, a light grey slate color. Please proceed with the application as being totally constructed of wood and stained. You list wood railings and then below a vinyl railing option. I assume from the 'ALT" written before the vinyl railing breakdown that the use of vinyl is an alternative to wood, correct? Vinyl is not an appropriate material for the Entrance Corridor. We ask that you use a natural material (i.e., wood) or a high- quality composite that is millable, paintable, and non -reflective. Also, if you opt to use pressure -treated wood, it must be stained. We can do one of two things: if you choose wood, I can condition your CoA that it must be wood and that it must be stained. If you'd like to have a composite option rather than just wood, then you will need to send me a new manufacturer's specification sheet which has an alternative option that is not vinyl. If we go the first route, I can send you your CoA today (depending on whether I hear back from you, of course); if we go the second route, I will send you a letter requesting changes today, but cannot finish my review until I receive revised specs. Please let me know how you prefer to proceed. Please let me know what additional information is required. Thank you, Roe Roe Allison, Project Manager Allison Building & Renovation, Inc. 16109 Burnley Road Barboursville, VA 22923 Ph.: (540) 832-3895 Cell: (434) 962-1849 From: Heather McMahon Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2017 4:18 PM To: abrinc sprynet.com Subject: ARB application for proposed new deck at Virginia Wineworks, 1585 Avon St Extd Hello Mr. Allison, As per our conversation, here is a link to the ARB application you will need to complete and submit to our office in order for the building permit to undergo ARB review, which is necessary since the site lies within the Entrance Corridor: http://www.albemarle.org/upload/images/forms_center/departments/Community Development/forms/arb applications/ARB_ Application 11 2015.pdf Please note in Part B: Review Type and Fee that this project is best described as the last item, "Building permits where the change is 50% or less of the altered elevation." You'll be happy to see that there is no associated fee. As part of the ARB application, you will need to submit supporting materials, and I have included the link to a checklist below: http://www.albemarle.org/upload/images/forms center/departments/Community Development/forms/arb applications/County- wide Certificate_ of Appropriateness Checklist building permit_1.pdf Please note that not all of the criteria listed in this checklist is applicable to your scope of work. In those instances, please write "N/A" next to the criteria that will not apply. One last note: have you and your client considered an industrial -style metal railing as an alternative to wood or composite material? A metal railing would be well suited to the building's corrugated metal materiality and its industrial form.
