I don't remember either but-given the precedent- Monticello is ok with galvalum roofs for the two buildings. Thanks
for checking,
Liz

Liz, We've received this application. Do you know how you will proceed with this?

Hi, Liz.The ARB has no guidelines specific to galvalum or metal roofs in general (other than the standard "should be
compatible with .... significant historic buildings"). I haven't pulled the file (and hate to rely on memory), but assume
Sherri is correct when she says that the same material was approved for the building that was most recently completed
there. With that in place, the ARB would likely be supportive of its use for the two buildings adjacent to the EC. I don't
remember the degree to which Monticello was involved in the review of the "new" building. Do you know if the
reflectivity was considered excessive, as viewed from Monticello, just after completion? Or if there has been a
substantial change in reflectivity now that the material has had time to weather? (Or is the orientation different enough
to limit the view?)

Hi Margaret-
I spoke with Ms.Tracinski yesterday about the Montessori roof project (and about old houses and wallpaper). I'm sure
you are aware that they want to replace the roof but I have concerns over the reflectivity of unpainted "galvalum." Does
the ARB have any design criteria or objections regarding this material for roofs?Just interested in your thoughts.
Liz

Hi Liz,
It was great talking to you today. I always love chatting with fellow historians and old house lovers. We are a separate
breed from those strange folks that couldn't imagine living in or renovating an old house!
First, a bit of Monticello imagery: Here is a picture of the wallpaper in the front hall of my 1870s house on the Trevilians
Battlefield. From talking with a woman who grew up in the house, this paper was put in for the occasion of her big
sister's wedding that was held at this house, probably around the mid-1970s when the bicentennial fashion was running
high. I'd love to know if someone at the Foundation is keeping track of popular culture images of Monticello and if so,
have they ever seen this paper? My photo here is not all that great, but to give you some scale, the buildings repeat over
the whole wall, each about 5-6" high on a cream colored background with midground trees and foreground vines. I'd
love it if you could pass this on and get me in touch with the person collecting this kind of information. I still can't decide
if I'm horrified at the plastering of kitchy images of Monticello over my wall, or if I love the honor with which it was
originally intended. I've given it the un-official title of my "Monticello-Monticello-Monticello wallpaper."
