To the County Engineer:
Murphy & Rude Malting Co., LLC is a craft malting company manufacturing malted
small grains (e.g., barley, wheat, rye) for use by brewers, distiller and bakers. The
process involves steeping raw grain with water, germinating steeped grain on an
open air 2,000 square foot epoxy -coated concrete floor, and kilning germinated
grain prior to cleaning, sorting, and bagging the product in 501b bags.
I will be the sole employee in our 6,295 square foot facility located at 1822
Broadway Street (zoned L-I; Parcel 00700-00-00-040E0). I anticipate hiring 4
additional employees by the end of 2021. None of our space will be open to the
public aside from occasional customer visits. I have reviewed and addressed the
performance standards of Zoning Ordinance Section 18-4.14 below:
Noise: Our operation will not create sound or impact noise levels in excess of the
values specified in Section 4.18.04 MAXIMUM SOUND LEVELS. Our major sources of
noise are:
1) Kiln blower located outside (9,OOOcfm, sound pressure levels of 64dB).
Manufacturer specifications sheet attached.
2) Natural gas fired furnace with air-to-air heat exchanger located outside that
will produce a low level of noise
3) Cyclonic dust collection system located outside that will run intermittently
during final malt cleaning and processing
4) 5HP Air compressor located inside that will run 5 minutes every hour
5) 3HP grain debearder located inside (built-in dust collection) that produces a
low noise level
6) 1HP Seed cleaner located inside (built-in dust collection) that produces a low
noise level
7) Occasional truck deliveries of equipment and raw grain.
Vibration: Our operation will not create vibration levels in excess of the values
specified in Section 4.14.02.
Glare: The interior lighting associated with this operation does not produce glare
that is visible beyond the lot line. An awning will cover the stainless steel drum
roaster (located outside). The outdoor kiln will be built with non-reflecting
materials.
Air Pollution: There will be limited emission of smoke and light odor resulting from
outdoor drum roaster operation. The 400-1b capacity drum roaster will operate less
than 10 hours per week.
Water Pollution: Murphy & Rude Malting Co. is a chemical -free operation and does
not represent a hazard to water quality. The only production of liquid waste is in the
form of slightly dirty steep water drained from the steeping tank at 3 intervals
throughout the 48-hour steeping process.
Radioactivity: My operation does not require handling of radioactive materials.
There will be no radioactive emissions.
Electrical Interference: My operation does not require any equipment that would
generate electrical disturbances.
