HomeMy WebLinkAboutSP201700021 Plan - Other (not approved) 2017-10-04Front Lawn View Clifton Inn Powe Studio Architects PC Albemarle County, Virginia 05.12.15 Clifton Inn Expansion The Clifton Inn, located in Albemarle County near Shadwell, VA is luxury inn which adapted the historic Clifton Manor House and grounds. The Clifton is listed on the National Register of Historic Places which, in its nomination summarizes the property as follows: Clifton is a large, rambling two-story wood frame dwelling located on a seven -acre property off State Route 729 in eastern Albemarle County. Situated on a wooded bluff overlooking the Rivanno River, across from the extinct port village of Milton, the house is the only remaining evidence of Thomas Mann Randolph's plan to start the sister town of North Milton. Built in the first quarter of the 19th-century, the original farmstead portion is at the center of later 19th- and 20th-century Colonial Revival -style additions and alterations. Today the house stands as one of Albemarle County's finest examples of early 20th- century domestic architecture, with a core unit and five -bay facade dating to the early 1800s. The property also includes a detailed brick office (ca. 1833-45); ruins of an early 19th-century springhouse, the shaft of a 19th-century stone -lined ice house, an early 20th-century chicken coop and an altered 1920s brick garage, all associated with Clifton's early history and modern renovations. Powe Studio Architects has been commissioned by the Inn's owner Mr. Mitch Willey to expand the Inn's luxury accommodations in a manor which is sensitve to and respectful of the scale, character and historic significance of the original manor house, outbuildings and grounds. Albermarle County zoning regulations indicate additions to the historic inn buildings would be permitted with an approved Special Use Permit. Zoning regulations also permit five bedroom Bed & Breakfast buildings. Our expansion program includes two basic components: • a series of "linked cottages" accommodating ten new bedroom suites with four new living areas, massed in a "U" shaped addition to the existing cottage south of the manor house, surrounding three sides of the existing croquet lawn • a five bedroom Bed & Breakfast building adjacent to the existing "chicken coop" building (which has already been adapted into accommodations) The linked cottages are a series of seven interconnected gabled "cottages" which are massed in a "U" shaped configuration surrounding three sides of the croquet lawn court, with the new "wing" aligning with the gabled end of the original cottage. These are one story interconnected cottages which are designed to reflect the massing, scale and detailing of the existing simple gabled standing seam metal roofed, painted shingle, brick end gabled, divided light floor -to -ceiling glazed original cottage, with some added period -appropriate residential elements incuding porches and a central cupola providing natual light into the center of two living areas. A portion of the cottage complex has lower level spaces which open at grade on the east and south sides where natural grade drops one story. The B&B residence is massed and detailed similar to the linked cottages, with standing seam gabled metal roofs, with proches and a central cupula (providing natural light into the center of the living area).
