Dear Heather:
Thank you for the important clarifications. Here are my responses:
1— Paid, please see attached payment receipt
2 — Understood
3 —Thank you
4 — Yes, we will paint the sign logo design on the white band
5 — I was thinking about nice flowering azaleas, but I am open to alternative suggestions. Please see the updated
landscape plan showing 7 azaleas planted with a minimum 24" height at planting.
Best regards,
Kevin

Hi again, Kevin,
One more thing: I may have not been clear, but as per #4 in my email response (below), it the logo is not paint — but is
acrylic or some plastic applied to the white board — please revise the sign drawing to state that the material of the sign is
acrylic. Otherwise, once I receive your response, I will make a note on the revised drawing that you intend to use only
point as the material. However, as per #5 in my email response (below), I will still need a revised landscape plan that
states which species of "Broadleaved Evergreen/Semi-Evergreen Shrubs" selected from the Albemarle County
Recommended Plants List you propose to plant.
Thanks,

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your email. In response to the points you raised below:
1. The only instance in which ARB review fees for sign applications for parcels within the Entrance Corridor overlay
district is waived is when that property is a building containing multiple businesses (such as a strip mall or
shopping center) and has an approved Comprehensive Sign Plan. Your property does not have a Comprehensive
Sign Plan and therefore does not qualify to have the review fee waived. I'm sorry you were under a different
impression, but the fee of $129 is due and must be paid for the review of your sign application to move forward.
2. Thank you for providing the dimensions of the sign on the sign drawing. I understand that this is a pre-existing
sign that you are re -facing; we ask all applicants to complete the application and provide all requested
information, and to be consistent, we ask that of all of our applicants, no matter the scale of the requested
changes (i.e., no matter if it's a plan to reface an existing sign or erect a new sign). We also try to keep all
information conveniently located in one place (i.e., on a sign drawing) so that our Code Enforcement staff can
easily refer to the application to verify all approved conditions have been met.
3. Your sign application did not specify that the lighting was external, but I have made note of that.
4. Just to clarify, the actual sign is not an acrylic face you intend to apply to the white sign band within the brick
frame, but you intend to point the logo within the white sign band? Is that correct? I will make that note on your
application.
5. We ask for you to provide the exact species of the 7 proposed shrubs so we can determine whether their full
growth height is appropriate; we wouldn't want an applicant to plant a species that grows so tall that it obscures
the signagel Please choose a plant and provide that information on a revised landscape plan.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
Thanks,

Dear Ms. McMahon:
I am writing in response to your letter dated February 7, 2018, attached. In response to each numbered item...
1— Given the questions below, I believe there may have been some contusion around the request 1 am making. This is
merely a refacing of an existing sign, not a newly constructed sign. The refacing involves only painting the existing sign
and adding the 7 new shrubs. 1 am not proposing to change its shape, size, lighting, or location. I reviewed this sign
refacing application on site with Margaret two weeks ago, and I was left with the impression that in this case the ARB
fee would be waived. If I mis-understood the fee, let me know and I will pay using the online payment system and send
you the receipt.
2 — I have re -attached the photo of the existing sign provided with the application and have written the dimensions on it.
3 —The sign is already externally illuminated. It is not proposed to be internally illuminated.
4 —The sign is already externally illuminated.
5 —The sign is made of brick as shown in the photo with the application and attached, again, herein. I have made a note
next to the photo that it is made of brick.
6 —The landscape plan is shown on the diagram included with the sign refacing application. 1 have included It herein and
noted that there are to be 7 new shrubs, no less than 24" tall at planting, chosen from the species list on the Albemarle
County Recommended Plants List within the category entitled "Broadleaved Evergreen/Semi-Evergreen Shrubs."
Please let me know how I can be of further assistance in completing this sign application.
Best regards,
Kevin
