RE: ARB 201800047, Helix Signage
Dear Mr. O'Brien
I have reviewed the above -noted sign applications. The following revisions are requested to make the proposal
consistent with the Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines.
1. The application fee of $129 has been paid. However, because of a mistake in the "incompleteness" letter,
from 3/7/2017, more fee then required was paid. Please email Jen Smith (ismith2(&albemarle.org) to
request a refund for the amount over paid which should be $59.
Rev. 1: Comment not vet addressed. If you have not done so already please contact Jen Smith for the
refund specified above. The County's "County View" system still shows an overpayment.
2. The height of each line of text must be provided in dimensions or notes. Please include those notes on the
"sign plan" itself and not in a separate text document. Also, although some text heights were provided they
were not complete. Text heights for the "SVOE" and "MoneyWise" portions of the sign must also be
included.
Rev. 1: Comment addressed.
3. The Pantone equivalent color numbers for each color used in the sign must be provided within the "sign
plan" itself and not in a separate text document. Also, "Grey", "Blue" and "Light Grey 656 C" do not
appear to be valid Pantone colors. For the "Grey" and "Blue" the Pantone # must also be included. For the
"Grey" it also must specify "warm" or "cool" grey. Although "Light Grey 656 C" appears to be a complete
Pantone name/number it does not appear to exist on the Pantone formula guide search webpage. There is a
"Pantone 656" that appear almost grey in the formula guide, but they appear to be in the blue color
spectrum and are not considered to be grey. Provided Pantone equivalent color numbers for all colors
being utilized in the sign on the "Sign Plan" sheet.
Rev. 1: Comment not fully addressed. The revisions to the "Cool Gray 11 UP" and "Process Blue U"
are correct. The "Light Grey 656" however is not a correct Pantone color, as mentioned in the initial
comment. Pantone color 656 is a very light blue color, not a grey color. The color on the sign
appears to be a grev and not a blue. The color box, under the color number, looks to be a light blue.
Address the following:
a) Either specify a specific light grey color (not 656), as appears to be shown on the sign, or
b) Specify a specific light blue color (such as 656) and change the colors in the sign to match.
c) Either way, ensure that the color in the sign and the color in the color boxes match each other.

4. Specify the type of illumination for the sign, even if it is existing, and add the appropriate note to the "sign
plan". It appears that existing internal lighting will be utilized. However, nothing in the sign plan specifies
that. If existing ground mounted lighting will be used to illuminate the sign add a note to the sign plan that
states, "Existing ground mounted lighting to remain. Any change to the illumination type or intensity must
first obtain ARB approval and an approved electrical pen -nit." If the sign will not be illuminated then a
note should state, "This sign has been approved as a non -illuminated sign (no lighting). To add lighting,
the applicant must first obtain ARB approval and an approved electrical permit."
Rev. 1: Comment not fully addressed. A portion of the note specified in the initial comment was
include in the sign plan, but not the full note. Also, additional text was added to the lighting note that
should not be included. Address the following:
a) Ensure that the note states "Existing ground mounted lighting to remain. Any change to the
illumination type or intensity must first obtain ARB approval and an approved electrical
permit."
b) For any additional wording of the "Lighting:" note either remove it from the sign plan or discuss
it with the sign plan reviewer prior to submission.
c) It must be ensured that no change in illumination type or intensity is proposed. If it is proposed
then ARB approval, and approval of an electrical permit, will be required as stated in the
required note specified in "a)" above.
5. Ensure that the overall height of the Helix portion of the sign, the multi -circle logo, and combined height of
the SVOE and MoneyWise portion of the sign are the same and aligned with each other. No portion the
sign should be higher or lower on the sign then the other portions of the sign. The sign must look like an
integrated whole and the logo must not be larger or higher than the text portions of the sign.
Rev. 1: Comment addressed.
6. Ensure that the space between the Helix portion of the sign and the left edge of the overall sign is no larger
than the space between the SVOE/MoneyWise portion of the sign and the right edge of the sign. There
appears to be a larger space on the left side of the sign. The sign must look like an integrated whole and the
logo must not be closer to one side than the other.
Rev. 1: Comment sufficiently addressed.
7. Specify on the "sign plan" that the sign has two sides and that those two sides will be identical.
Rev. 1: Comment not fully addressed. There are two parts to the comment and only one has been
addressed. A note has been added that states "The sign is double sided." Which is what was specified
in the first part of this comment. However the following still needs to be addressed:
a) Provide the wording for the second part of the comment, which is to specify that the "two sides
will be identical'.
b) It does not appear that the second sentence in the note "Colors on logo are within same range
and we believe provide appropriate balance and unified design." has anything to do with the first
sentence. For the purpose of clarity, and to avoid a misinterpretation, either separate this as a
separate note on a separate line or remove it from the sign plan.
8. The information in the text document provided, once edited as specified above, should be integrated into
the "sign plan" and not submitted as a separate document.
Rev. 1: Comment addressed.

9• ]NEW COMMENT] The wording of the note under "Construction Material & Design" appears to
specify changes to more than the sign to be resurfaced. Because there are improvements specified for
the "monument structure and posts" as well as the "Existing Masonry Base" they also must be
evaluated, clearly defined and approved in this sign plan. Address the following:
a) Use consistent wording. Since "existing structure" and "masonry base" referring to the same
part of the monument sign refer to it in only one of those two ways.
b) Ensure that the "existing structure"/"masonry base" has a specific color assigned to it. Show
that color, with its Pantone equivalent color number, on the sign plan and specify in the
description that it will be that color.
c) Remove the wording from the sign plan of "... in standard color of choice...". Any color on this
sign, and any change to the monument base and posts, must be specifically stated and approved
with this sign plan.
d) It is uncertain whether the "Stucco to Match Building Stucco" only applies to the material or to
both the material and color of the "existing structure"/"masonry base. Either:
L Reword the description to clearly specify that "Stucco to Match Building Stucco' only
applies to the proposed material finish of the "existing structure"/"masonry base" or
ii. Reword the description to clearly specify that "Stucco to Match Building Stucco' applies to
both the proposed material finish and color of the "existing structure"/"masonry base".
