1946-07-17 A regular meeting of the Board of County Supervisors of Albemarle County, Virginia,i was held at the Office Building of said County on the 17th day of July, 1946. Present: Messrs. P. H. Gentry, E. ~. Ballard, T. E. Bruce, Henry Chiles, C. Pur- cell McCue, and W. W. Wood. Absent: None. Officers present: County Executive, Commonwealth's Attorney, and Sheriff. Minutes of the meeting of June 19, '1946, wer~ read and approved. As provided by Law, Mr. H. G. Cockrell, Director of Finance, submitted the Delin- quent List for the year 1945. Upoh motion, duly made and seconded, it was ordered~that no part of this list be ~ublished. Mr. Berlin Eye appeared and requested that the State Forest Service be allowed to employ the services of Julian Thomas on a full-time basis and that the County continue to pay part of his salary. Upon motion, made by Mr. McCue and seconded by Mr. Need, Mr. Eye was~ advised that this matter would be taken under consideration and that he would be given an answer at the next meeting of the Board. Mr. Julian Thomas appeared-and advised the Board that his authority as assistant Game Warden was not recognized by the State and since the County did not have anyone to serve claims against the Dog Fund, Mr. Cockrell was authorized to work~ with Mr. Fife and with the Sheriff in appointing a Deputy Sheriff to take care of dog claims until a satisfactory ar- rangement can be made with the State Game Department. Mr. H. G. Cockrell and Mr. P. H. Gentry were appointed as a committee to confer with Mr. E. O. McCue, Jr., Mr. Allen K. Randolph, andt~ i Mr. John S. Battle ts L~equest that they consult the State Game Department regarding the Game i Warden situtation in this~'County. Request was received for the improvement of Route 672 from the point at which the present improvement stops to the sign which is approximately 1/2 of a mile beyond. Upon motion, .made by Mr. Ballard and seconded by Mr. Bruce, the following resolution was unanimously adopted: BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Supervisors of Albe~ ~ marle County, Virginia, that the State Highway Department be and is hereby recommended to take int$ the Secondary System approximately 1/2 of a mile of Route 872 from the point a~Whic~%he~present improvement stops to the sign, 1/2 mile beyond that point. After considerable discussion of the existing vacancies on the School Board,;~Mr. Bruce nominated ~r. W. A. Dawson, Jr. to replace ~r. C. R. Dorrier from Scottsville, and Mr. Ballard nominated ~r. H. V. Herold to replace ~r. Bo C. Baker from the Ivy District, both nominations being seconded by ~r. Wood. ~ere b.e~g nourisher nominations, Mr. Dawson and ~r. Herold were unanimously appointed. Cockrell, Director of Finance, submitted a Statement of Expenses of the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney for the month of June, 1946, one-half of which to be borne by the State. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, this Statement was examined, veri- fied and approved. A Statement of the Expenses. incurred in the maintenance of prisoners confined in t~ County Jail during the month of June, 1946, was submitted. Upon motion, duly made and secon~d~d,~ this Statement was examined, verified, and approved. A Summary Statement of Prisoner Days for the month~of June, 1946, was submitted. Upon motion, duly ma~e and seconded, this Statement was examined, verified, a~d approved. Claim of Dr. Richard T. Ergenbright, Jail Physician, amounting to $6.00 was pre- sented and approved for payment. Reports were received from Mr. C. H. Shapleigh and Mr. Cockrell was instructed to investigate them and action was deferred until the next meeting. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, $796.00 was appropriated to cover the increase ~n salaries of the Dep~y Sheriffs am approved by the Board on June 19, 1946, and by the Compensation Board on July 3, 1946o Communication was received from ~iss junia E. Graves, Superintendent of the DepartJ merit of Public Welfare, requesting that Mrs. Anne H. Loving be granted a two weeks leave of absence. Upon motion, duly made and seconded, Mrs. Loving was.granted ~wO'.~weeks in addition to ~r~vac&$i~n, and pay for the entire four weeks was allowed. An offer of $125.00 was received from Mr. George ~. Mayo for 3~13 acres of land which was taken over by the County in a tax sale from Charles Lewis of ths Scottsville Dis- ~rict, Upon motion, made by Mr. McCue and seconded by Mr. ~ood, thiw offer was accepted. A Statement of the Receipts and Expenditures of the Joint Health Department for ~he fiscal year ending June 30, 1946, was presented and ordered filed. Communication was received from Dorothy E. Moore requesting that Route 757 be im- proved and was ordered referred to ~r. R. Co Ambler, Resident Engineer. ~r. W. B. Speck appeared and presented a plan to provide for the hospitalization and treatment of indigent persons through the joint action of the State and the County, Upon motion, made by ~r. Chiles and seconded by Mr. Bruce, the plan was accepted as outlined by Mr. Speck and Miss Junia Eo Gravew, Superintendent of the Department of Public ~elfare, was designated as the agency to certify indigent cases to the University Hospital for hospitalization and treatment. Claims against the County Amounting to $23,104.49 were presented, examined, and allowed and certified to the Director of Finance for ~ayment and charged against the fol~owins funds: General Fund School Fund Dog Tax Fund Crozet Fire District Fund Dog Tax Credit Account Commonwealth of Va.
